history

In the year 884 the place was mentioned for the first time in a deed of donation from Charlemagne . In the Thirty Years War the community was completely destroyed. In 1752 Appenwihr was destroyed again, this time due to a major fire.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Appenwihr belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district . After being bombed and destroyed again, Appenwihr was liberated by the American allies on February 5, 1945, three days after the capture of Colmar.
