Balgau (Alsatian "Balgäu") is a French commune with 969 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the community association Pays Rhin-Brisach .
history
Documents indicate that the settlement belonged to an abbey in 896. The name Balgau goes back to a noble family in the 14th and 15th centuries. The village was not spared the consequences of the Thirty Years' War . From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Balgau belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district .

Balgau is a member of the cross- border local association Mittelhardt-Oberrhein , which promotes cross-border communal cooperation between municipalities in Alsace and Baden on the basis of the Karlsruhe Convention .
Attractions
The Saint-Nicolas ( St. Nicholas ) Church was built in 1861. In 1874 she received a Rinckenbach organ, which is now the oldest of the brothers Martin and Joseph Rinckenbach.
