Artzenheim ( Alsatian Aarze , IPA : [ɑːrtsə] ) is a French commune with 846 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the canton of Ensisheim and the Pays Rhin-Brisach municipal association .

geography

Artzenheim, a municipality in the Rhine valley, is located in the northeast of the Haut-Rhin department, on the banks of the Rhine , 17 km from Colmar . The Rhine-Rhône Canal runs along the western edge of the town .

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in 670 in connection with a donation from Duke Echiton to the monastery of Ebersmünster . This monastery also held the jurisdiction.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Artzenheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district . The residents of Artzenheim were evacuated at the beginning of the Second World War, and they returned in the autumn of 1940 after the French surrender. In the spring of 1945 it was liberated from the German occupation.
