Rob Houwer (born December 13, 1937 in Hoogeveen ) is a Dutch film producer , film director and screenwriter .

Life

Houwer began studying theater studies in Munich in 1956 and attended the Munich University of Television and Film . He worked as a film critic , director and camera assistant . In 1959 he founded his Houwer-Film and was one of the signatories of the Oberhausen Manifesto . After a few short films, most of which he directed himself, murder and manslaughter under Volker Schlöndorff's direction caused a sensation for the first time in 1967 . Peter Fleischmann's hunting scenes from Lower Bavaria (1969) is considered one of his greatest international successes . Houwer became an important sponsor of the New German Cinema , but also produced sex films typical of the time and took part in the Roy Black film Grün ist die Heide .

In 1971 Houwer returned to the Netherlands and now devoted himself primarily to the film scene there. At first he became the most important producer of the director Paul Verhoeven . Houwer is Honorary Consul of Grenada and Order of Merit Officer of Orange-Nassau .
