Methods

In many people, the skin in the anal and genital areas is more pigmented than the surrounding skin . By means of anal bleaching, the skin in these areas should be matched to the lighter shade of the rest of the skin. For this, acidic or keratolytic creams and lotions are usually used (vitamin A, AHA, azelaic, koji, ascorbic acid ; tretinoin ; rucinol ), which are used to treat freckles and pigment disorders. The permanent blockage of the tyrosinase in the skin prevents the pigmentation, and after a regeneration cycle of the upper skin cells of about 28 days, the skin becomes lighter and remains light as long as the tyrosinase is blocked continuously. Sometimes hydroquinone- containing substances such as hydroquinone and tretinoin occur in the USA , the health-damaging effects of which are controversial. After stopping the creams, the lightening effect only lasts for a few days, as the melanocytes (cells that are responsible for pigmenting the human skin) in the genital skin have androgen receptors. These are receptors for z. B. Testosterone and estrogen , which activate the melanocytes. Bleaching is sometimes offered by cosmetic studios and dermatologists, but it can also be done privately at home with the cream mentioned above. Dermatologists can also destroy dark pigments with laser treatment.

Anal bleaching was initially used in the porn industry and has since found its way into wider circles. Originally, the practice was mainly widespread in the USA, but in the 2010s the treatment method reached user numbers in Germany that made the media speak of a trend.

The bleaching of the skin in this region of the body is to be seen against the background of a stronger aestheticization of the intimate area: Due to the increasing presence of nudity and an open approach to sexuality, beauty standards and ideals are also applied there. The pubic hair removal as well as the surgical reduction of the labia , clitoral hood reduction and genital piercing are expressions of the same social development. In addition to anal bleaching, there is also vaginal bleaching and penis bleaching.
