Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg
The Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg is a 6 hectare Clos , i. H. an enclosed by a wall vineyard, directly on the domain Weingut Schloss Schönborn in the district Hattenheim in Eltville in the Rheingau area.
Vineyard
To the north, the Pfaffenberg is bordered and shielded by a long quarry stone wall along the road from Hattenheim to Oestrich , to the east it is protected by the village of Hattenheim and to the west by the buildings and the old trees of Schloss Reichartshausen , the seat of the EBS University for Economy and law . This sheltered location, together with the slope facing south towards the nearby Rhine , which has the greatest width and strongest sun reflection here, results in a special microclimate in the Pfaffenberg. The soil is deep with humus loam - loess soil . Due to this “special” location, flowering and ripening always take place around eight days earlier in Pfaffenberg than in the rest of the district.
This vineyard produces great and great wines, including Beerenauslese , Trockenbeerenauslese and Eisweine among many others . In general, the Riesling of the Pfaffenberg is characterized by a fragrant fruit (hints of peaches), earthy spiciness and a strong acidity .
Ownership
Since the 12th century, the vineyard and the Reichartshausen monastery yard belonging to it had been owned by the Eberbach monastery . Under Abbot Adolph Werner von Salmünster, today's wall was built around the Pfaffenberg from 1750. Parts of the vineyard have been owned by the Count of Schönborn since the 17th century . The first half was acquired on August 12, 1642, part in 1665 and the rest on August 22, 1817.
