Houmt Souk ( Arabic حومة السوق, DMG Ḥaumat as-Sūq 'market district') is a city in southeastern Tunisia and the capital of the island of Djerba . With around 65,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in the region.
The place has a long trading tradition, as evidenced by several old caravanserais . The Romans already owned a settlement here, the name of which was passed down as Gerra . During the late antiquity the place was called Girba . This then new name carried over to the island known up to then under the name Meninx . Until the Islamic expansion, there was a Roman Catholic diocese on Girba .
Today Houmt Souk is mainly determined by tourism . In the city there are many tourist shops, the administration of the island, a small fishing port, the Bordj-el-Kebir fortress and the folklore museum.
