The Étang de l'Or is a southern French coastal lake (étang) on the Mediterranean coast southeast of Montpellier . More than 99% of it is located in the communes of Pérols , Mauguio , Marsillargues and La Grande Motte in the Hérault department, and to a very small extent in the commune of Aigues-Mortes in the Gard department in the Occitania region .
location
The km from east to west about 15 long, up to 3 km wide and about 1 to 4 m deep Etang de l'Or - as well as the west subsequent Étang de Pérols - by a narrow, now almost entirely built of sand dunes ( Spit ) separated from the sea, which is only connected to the lake by a short canal at one point, namely at Pérols.
Tributaries
Several brooks and coastal rivers flow into the lake - only water-bearing after sufficient rainfall - the largest of which are the approx. 25 km long Salaison , the approx. 23 km long Cadoule and the approx. 20 km long Bérange . The Canal du Rhône à Sète also has some connections to the Étang de l'Or . However, all tributaries together have almost no influence on the salinity of the water, as it has a high evaporation rate.
ecology
As early as 1983, the lake and adjacent wetlands were classified as Site naturel classé . Today it is part of the Natura 2000 project of the European Union .
Others
Étang de l'Or is also the title of a novel by Gaston Baissette from 1946.
