Michael Tien Puk-sun ( Chinese田 北辰, born August 25, 1950 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese entrepreneur and politician of the pro-Beijing camp in Hong Kong . Since October 1, 2012, he has represented the New Territories West constituency on the Hong Kong Legislative Council .

Career

Michael Tien was born in Hong Kong and attended the Diocesan Boys' School there before moving to the Worcester Academy in Massachusetts . He continued his studies in the United States . Tien first studied at Cornell University in Ithaca , New York . There he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He later graduated from Harvard Business School with a Masters degree in corporate administration.

Tien founded the mail order company G2000 in 1980 . From December 2001 to December 2007, Tien was President of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation .

Political career

In 2008 Tien joined the Liberal Party . He left the party in late 2010 and founded the New People's Party with Regina Ip in January 2011 . In the 2012 elections to the Hong Kong Legislative Council , Tien was elected to the Hong Kong Legislative Council for the New Territories West constituency. Tien rose to become vice chairman of the party. In the 2017 election as Chief Executive of Hong Kong, he supported Regina Ips' candidacy. When she withdrew from the race for lack of sufficient support, he supported Joseph Tsang and a little later the eventual winner of the election Carrie Lam .

Despite his pro-Chinese stance, which is considered moderate, he left the New People's Party in April 2017 because he accused the party of too close ties to the People's Republic of China . When the NPP was founded, it should have been agreed that no state representatives from the People's Republic of China should be invited to party events. However, according to Tien, IP's party failed to adhere to these agreements. He then founded his own Roundtable party , stating that it was necessary to maintain a certain distance from the government in Beijing .

In the 2019 local elections in Hong Kong , which ended in a landslide victory for the pro-democracy camp , Tien lost his seat in the Discovery Park constituency in the district council of the Tsuen Wan district to the pro-democracy politician Lau Cheuk Yu.
