Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor , GBM , GBS , ( Chinese  林 鄭月娥 , Pinyin Lín-Zhèng Yuè'é , Jyutping Lam 4 -Zeng 6 Jyut 6 ngo 4 ; born May 13, 1957 in Wan Chai , Hong Kong ) is a Chinese politician . Since July 1, 2017, she has been the Chief Executive of the Chinese Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. She is the first woman to hold this office. From 2012 to 2017 she held the post of Chief Secretary of Administration , the general secretary of the Hong Kong government administration - under the then Prime Minister Leung Chun-ying .

Career

Lam, née Cheng, was born the fourth of five children to a low-income family. She grew up in Wan Chai and attended the Catholic girls 'school St Francis' Canossian College of the Canossian . She then studied social work for one year at the University of Hong Kong , then sociology . She graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1980 . From 1981 to 1982 she studied at Cambridge University and received a diploma in development research .

Since 1980 she has worked in various positions in the civil service; Among other things, she worked in financial administration for seven years. In 2007 she was appointed Secretary for Development in the government of Donald Tsang . In 2012, Leung Chun-ying named her Chief Secretary . Lam was responsible for the implementation of the 2014/2015 electoral reform and held talks with the participants in the protests in Hong Kong in 2014 .

In January 2017, Lam resigned as chief secretary and announced her candidacy in the election of the head of government on March 26, 2017. Lam was not elected directly by the people, but indirectly through an electoral committee and received 777 out of 1,194 votes. She took office on July 1, 2017; Xi Jinping took the oath of office from her. Before and after the election there were protests in Hong Kong because of Lam's proximity to Beijing's central government.

Protests began in June 2019 against the passing of a law that would allow people suspected and wanted by the PRC to be extradited to the PRC .

Carrie Lam has been married to the mathematics professor Lam Siu-por ( 林兆波 , Lín Zhàobō , Jyutping Lam 4 Siu 6 bo 1 ) since 1984 , with whom she has two sons. She was also a UK citizen until 2007 . Her husband lives in the UK.
