Donald Tsang Yam Kuen , GBM , JP ( Chinese  曾蔭權  /  曾荫权 , Pinyin Zēng Yīnquán , Jyutping Zang 1 Jam 3 kyun 4 ; * October 7, 1944 in Hong Kong ) succeeded Tung Chee-hwas from June 21, 2005 to June 30 , 1944 June 2012 the head of administration of the Chinese special administrative region Hong Kong.

Political career

Tsang is the son of a police officer. He worked in the public administration of the Hong Kong Crown Colony. He was appointed finance secretary by the British colonial administration and held this post until 2001. In order to support the Hong Kong dollar , futures and short sales were banned under his leadership during the Asian financial crisis in August 1997, thus successfully ending financial speculation.

From 2001 he became the chief secretary of the administration and deputy of Tung Chee-hwa, who resigned from his office as administrative chief in March 2005 due to ongoing protests of the population against the Hong Kong policy of the PRC . For the remaining term of two years, Tsang was elected by a selection committee and without opposing candidates as the new head of administration. He was sworn into office by Chinese President Wen Jiabao on June 21, 2005. Thanks to his good relationship with the Chinese government, he was re-elected for a second term. It lasted from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2012.

In October 2015 he was appointed in Hong Kong by the Independent Commission Against Corruption ( 廉政 公署 , Liánzhèng Gōngshǔ , Jyutping Lim 6 zing 3 Gung 1 cyu 5 , English Independent Commission Against Corruption , short: 廉署 , Lián Shǔ , Jyutping Lim 6 Cyu 5 , English ICAC ) charged with abuse of office. In February 2017, he was sentenced to 20 months in prison for corruption.

Trivia

Donald Tsang is also called "the man with the bow" by the people of Hong Kong. He never wears ties, he always wears a bow tie .
