Hong Kong local elections 2019
The local elections in Hong Kong in 2019 took place on November 24 of 2019. All district representatives of the 18 districts of Hong Kong were elected. This corresponds to 452 seats. The 27 ex-officio seats of the Chairmen of the Rural Committees are not affected by the election.
background
Because of the protests in Hong Kong that had been going on for months, it was uncertain whether or not to hold the election. Activist Joshua Wong originally wanted to run for a seat in the elections, but the Hong Kong government refused to do so.
Results
The pro-democracy camp , which is close to the cause of the protesters, won 17 of the 18 districts of Hong Kong with a record turnout of over 71% . They were able to more than triple their result from the previous 124 to 388 seats (this corresponds to over 85%), while parties close to Beijing only got 62 seats (approx. 14%); a loss of over 242 seats. Observers therefore speak of a "landslide victory" for the democracy movement. Although the district councils up for election have little political influence, their election is considered the only truly democratic one in Hong Kong and the result is a symbolically important confirmation of the protest movement; especially because the administration under Carrie Lam had previously repeatedly claimed that the demonstrators did not speak for a majority of the population.
