Loupian is a French commune with 2,160 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the canton of Mèze .
geography
Loupian is located on the Étang de Thau (Thausee), a lagoon on the western Mediterranean coast of southern France , 28 kilometers southwest of Montpellier , between the canton capital Mèze in the southwest, the neighboring municipality of Bouzigues in the east and Villeveyrac in the north. The municipal area covers 2396 hectares.
history
The discovery of a Roman villa proves that Loupian was already settled in Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486). The Via Domitia ran through the northern municipality.

The Catholic Church of St. Cäcilia (Sainte Cécile) belongs to the parish Notre Dame du Sourire with its seat in Mèze . It lies in the Archdiocese of Montpellier .
Attractions
The Romanesque church of Saint-Hippolyte dates from the 12th century. The church was fortified in the 14th century . It was classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) in 1923 .
The ruins of a Roman villa with Gallo-Roman mosaics were discovered in the northern municipality. The villa was built in the 1st century BC and was inhabited until the 6th century. The mosaics date from the 2nd century. The villa had a large wine cellar . Viticulture was practiced there and in the 1st and 2nd centuries the wine was shipped to a small port in the north of the Thausees. In 1970 the ruins were classified as a monument historique. The Villa-Loupian Museum was set up on the site .
The Gothic church of Sainte-Cécile was built in the 14th century in place of a primitive church from the 4th century. In the 8th century a necropolis was established on the primitive church . In 1949 the church was classified as a monument historique.
economy
Important occupations of the Loupianais (residents) are viticulture and mussel farming . There is a wine cooperative on site.
