Balaruc-les-Bains is a French commune with 6,751 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region in southern France . Balaruc-les-Bains belongs to the arrondissement of Montpellier and the canton of Frontignan . The inhabitants are called Balarucois .

geography

The municipality is located on the Étang de Thau , a lagoon lake on the Mediterranean. Balaruc-les-Bains is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Balaruc-le-Vieux in the north, Frontignan in the east and south and Bouzigues in the west.

history

The thermal baths (brine baths with temperatures between 34 and 40 degrees Celsius and a high proportion of calcium and magnesium) of Balaruc were already known in ancient times and were used by the Romans. In Roman antiquity, Balaruc was called Maimona (sometimes: Mannona ). In 1886 the former municipality of Balaruc was divided into today's municipalities of Balaruc-les-Bains and Balaruc-le-Vieux.
