Jacou ( Occitan : Jacon ) is a French commune with 6,791 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Montpellier and is part of the canton of Montpellier - Castelnau-le-Lez . The inhabitants are called Jacoumards .

geography

Jacou is about five kilometers north-northeast of Montpellier . Jacou is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Teyran in the north, Le Crès in the east, Castelnau-le-Lez in the south and Clapiers in the west.

history

In 860 the place is mentioned for the first time as Jocon . In 1144 the Petruskirche is recorded in the Cartulaire de Maguelone .
