history
Traces show a prehistoric settlement from around 3000 BC. BC Romans also lived here. The present place was re-established in the course of the settlement policy in connection with the Reconquista . The first mention of today's place comes from the year 960 AD. At the end of the 10th century Almansor conquered the castle of Sernancelhe, until 1055 Ferdinand I drove the Moors out of the region.
The place received its first city rights in 1124 , which King Alfonso II confirmed in 1220 . King Manuel I renewed the town charter in 1514 .
