history

The first documented mention comes from the 6th century AD. Today's Tarouca belonged to the Visigoth Empire and was a parish of the Lamego diocese . The place was called Castro de Rei and was the seat of a district. In the course of their conquest from 711 , the Moors also subjugated Castro de Rei . The current place name probably comes from this time and developed from the Arabic word taroca , which means frequented or frequently visited . At the time Lamego had business ties to the Emirate of Córdoba and then the Caliphate of Córdoba , and in this context nearby Tarouca was important, which was already at the time of the Roman occupation on two crossing Roman roads and thus traditionally a relative one Importance as a trading place.

King Ferdinand of León took Tarouca from the Moors in 1057 . Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques , had the first Cistercian monastery built here from 1140 with the São João de Tarouca monastery, which was followed by the Salzedas monastery , which was expanded in 1159 and handed over to the Cistercians in 1168 , on the initiative of Dona Teresa Afonso, wife of D. Afonso Henriques teacher Egas Moniz . The district town of Tarouca received its first city rights in 1262 , still under the name of Castro Rei . From 1364 the place was then already led as Tarouca.

In 1896 the independent district of Tarouca was briefly dissolved and restored in 1898 , now in its current composition. Tarouca, previously run as a small town ( Vila ), was elevated to a town ( Cidade ) in 2004 .
