The Salzedas Monastery (Santa Maria de Salzedas) is a former Cistercian abbey in the Tarouca district in the Viseu district in Portugal .
history
The area was populated by hermits as early as the 9th century. The monastery probably became Cistercian in 1159 (or 1168) and belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The foundation is said to go back to D. Teresa Afonso, the wife of Egas Moniz . Like all Portuguese Cistercian monasteries, Salzedas was dissolved in 1834.
Buildings and plant
The cloister is to the right of the church. From the 16th to the 18th century, the monastery buildings were renewed. The large monastery church has a baroque facade. In the sacristy two paintings from the 16th century depicting Saints Rochus and Sebastian.
