José Leite de Vasconcelos (born July 7, 1858 in Ucanha , † May 17, 1941 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese Romance philologist , ethnographer and dialectologist .

life and work

Leite de Vasconcelos came from a Portuguese noble family. From 1881 to 1886 he studied medicine in Porto . After a short period as a doctor, he became librarian at the National Library in Lisbon in 1887 and numismatics teacher there in 1888. In 1899 he went to Paris, studied at the Collège de France and at the Sorbonne and received his doctorate with the Thèse Esquisse d'une dialectologie portugaise (Paris / Lisbon 1901; edited by Maria Adelaide Valle Cintra, Lisbon 1970, 1987). From 1903 to 1909 he lectured on Portuguese philology at the National Library. At the University of Lisbon , which was founded in 1911 , he taught Latin, French, Romance linguistics and, finally, Portuguese philology. Many of his numerous writings were only published after his death.

Leite de Vasconcelos founded the Revista Lusitana magazine . Arquivo de Estudos Filológicos e Etnográficos relativos a Portugal (1887), Arqueólogo Português (1895) and Boletim de Etnografia (1920). In 1893 he founded the "Museu Etnográfico de Belém" (later: Museo Etnológico, today: Museu Nacional de Arqueologia ).

Numerous streets in Portugal and Brazil bear his name, and there is a lecture hall at the University of Lisbon.
