history

Portugal's first king D. Afonso Henriques bequeathed the area to the knight Paio Cortês in 1146. In the deed of donation, Ucanha was mentioned as the oldest place in the area. It remained a vila (small town with administrative rights) and seat of a district until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg . Ucanha became a parish of Mondim County in 1836 , only to become a parish of Tarouca County after the county was dissolved in 1898.

On September 29, 2013, the municipality of Ucanha was merged with the municipality of Gouviães to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Gouviães e Ucanha as part of the administrative reorganization . The headquarters of the new municipality became Gouviães.
