Carregal is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Sernancelhe . 393 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011). The writer Aquilino Ribeiro (1885–1963), associated with Germany, was born in Carregal.

history

The place was first mentioned in the 11th century. The area belonged to Egas Moniz and his brother Mem Moniz. In the royal surveys of 1258 it was listed as part of the Hospitaller Order.

Carregal became an independent municipality in the 16th century and belonged to the Caria district until its dissolution in 1855 . Since then, Carregal has been a municipality in the Sernancelhe district.

Culture and sights

A number of sacred buildings are listed in the community, including the Igreja Matriz de Carregal parish church built in 1545 (after its patronage, also Igreja do Divino Espírito Santo , English: Church of the Holy Spirit). The primary school building and the Fonte de Tabosa fountain are also listed.

As the most important monument of the community, however, this applies monastery Convento de São Bernardo in Tabosa do Carregal, after their patron saint and Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção (dt .: Monastery of Our Lady of the Assumption), also known as Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Assunção de Tabosa known. The Mannerist - Baroque nunnery was built from 1685 and is considered the last Cistercian monastery to be built in the country. After the Liberal Revolution of 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg (civil war 1826-34) the monastery was closed, in the course of the dissolution of all church orders. The last nun died on March 27, 1850, and the monastery was left to decay, only the church was relatively well preserved. In 1999, two professors bought the complex and began slowly rebuilding the building.

The tradition of the Fálgaros from Tabosa do Carregal, an Easter pastry made from eggs, flour, soft cheese and salt, was originally founded by the nuns and is still cultivated today by the older women of the village.

The rock that has become known as Penedo que bol and weighs around 20 tons, which can be set in motion by a person without the rock moving from its place, gained some fame .
