Cistercian Abbey of Tabosa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Tabosa (also: Taboza ) was 1692-1850 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Carregal , Circle Sernancelhe , Roman Catholic Diocese of Lamego , in Portugal .

history

Bernardine women from the Mocambo Monastery (which strictly observed the Benedictine Rule ) settled in 1692 in the Nossa Senhora da Assunção ("Assumption of Mary") monastery founded by a widowed aristocrat 30 kilometers south of the Rio Douro , the construction of which had begun in 1685. The founding convention consisted of five nuns, including the abbess of Mocambo, the prioress (first abbess of Tabosa) and the subprioress, as well as a chorus novice and a conversational novice. The monastery was under the supervision of São Pedro das Águias Monastery and belonged to the Autonomous Cistercian Congregation of Saint Bernard of Alcobaça . From 1771 to 1779 the convent was incorporated into the Nazaré de Setúbal monastery (which was set up in 1769 for the earthquake-damaged convent of the Nazaré de Mocambo monastery in the Jesuit college Franz Xavier in Setúbal ) (due to the deterioration of the buildings) , but was able to return after the renovation. Like all Portuguese monasteries after the victory of the Liberals in the Miguelista War , the Tabosa Abbey was closed to newcomers in 1834. The last nun died in 1850. The monastery fell into disrepair. The existing buildings have been under monument protection since 1971. They are private property and a member of the European Charter of Cistercian Abbeys and Places .
