Castelnau-le-Lez is a French commune in the department of Herault in the region Occitania . It forms a uniform settlement area with Montpellier and other suburbs . The city has 20,480 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and is located on the banks of the Lez River .

history

In 1890, the French scientist Georges Vacher de Lapouge found bones suggesting a human ancestor from the Neolithic Age . Scientists estimated the height of the entire human to be 3.5 meters. This led to the name The Giant of Castelnau . The bones were taken to the University of Montpellier and examined further.
