Meze is a town in the department of Herault in the region Occitan in southern France . It has 11,587 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and is the seat of the administration of the canton of the same name . The inhabitants are called "Mèzois" .

Mèze is located on the northern bank of the Étang de Thau . Neighboring cities are Marseillan in the southwest, Montagnac in the northwest, Villeveyrac in the northeast, Bouzigues in the east and Sète on the other side of the lake in the south.

history

As the finds of dinosaur eggs show, the area around Mèze was populated by dinosaurs more than 65 million years ago. First human settlement takes place in the 8th century BC. Chr. By Phoenician sailors. The name Mèze is said to come from the Phoenician Mansa and means high place from where a smoke rises . From the 6th century BC Chr.
