The smallest (silver) coin based on the French arithmetic pound, the livre , is called denier (borrowed from the Latin denomination of the coin denarius ) .

Twelve deniers make one sou , 20 sous make one livery , so that 240 deniers make one livery . The denier corresponds to the penny of the English and the penny of the German arithmetic pound system. Like the French denier coin, both go back to the Carolingian coin system introduced by Charlemagne with its basic unit, the Karl pound .

The last French deniers tournois , already containing a lot of copper , were minted in Tours in 1649.
