The Vidourle is a coastal river in southern France that runs in the Occitania region . On its way, the Vidourle crosses the Gard department and forms the border with the neighboring Hérault department for long stretches .

course

The source stream of the Vidourle ( Ruisseau de Frégère ) rises in the southeastern foothills of the Cevennes , the Montagne de la Fage , in the municipality of Saint-Roman-de-Codières . The Vidourle drained generally southeastward, reached in its lower reaches, the Camargue , crosses west of Aigues-Mortes the ship channel Canal du Rhône à Sète and ends after 95 kilometers at Le Grau-du-Roi in the Mediterranean . Shortly before its mouth, it becomes part of the Aigues-Mortes sea channel into the Mediterranean.

Hydrology

The river is mostly almost dry in summer; the flow rate goes back to 3 m³ / s. After prolonged or heavy rains, however, so-called 'Vidourladen' (French: les vidourlades ) with discharge rates of around 1500 m³ / s occur. The cities of Quissac and Sommières were severely damaged in the years 1575, 1684, 1689, 1723, 1745, 1812, 1858, 1891, 1907, 1933, 1958 and 2002.

The Vidourle has always had difficulties reaching the Mediterranean; for a long time he lost himself in a swamp near Saint-Laurent-d'Aigouze . Then in the 19th century it flowed into Lake Mauguio . Today artificial estuaries lead it to the Mediterranean.

Attractions

In Sommières , 7 pillars of a Roman bridge over the river are still preserved; however, the bridge profile was flattened in the 19th century. The Roman road of Via Domitia crossed the river at Villetelle ; the only remnant is the arch of the ancient Pont Ambroix near the Roman oppidum of Ambrussium .

Others

According to some linguists , the Vidourle, and not the Rhone, forms the border between the Provençal language in the east and the Languedoc language in the west.
