The Rieu Massel is a river in France that runs in the Occitania region . It rises in the Hérault department , in the extreme northeast of the municipality of Ferrières-les-Verreries , just on the border with the municipality of Pompignan in the neighboring Gard department . It generally drains in a north-westerly direction through a karst area and flows into the Vidourle as a right tributary after about 22 kilometers at the municipal boundary of Conqueyrac and Sauve .

Hydrology

For most of the year the river runs in the karst underground. Surface water can only be observed after heavy rainfall. However, these can be so severe that after a historic flood in 1958, a flood protection system was built near Ceyrac on the Rieu Massel and put into operation in 1968.
