Conqueyrac is a French commune with 97 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .

geography

Conqueyrac is located in the sparsely populated west of the Gard department between the small towns of Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort and Quissac . It is located in slightly hilly land between the Cevennes in the north and the coastal region around the city of Montpellier in the south . The distance to Montpellier is 39 kilometers as the crow flies, while the south-eastern city of Nîmes is 38 kilometers away. The Vidourle flows through the municipality over a longer distance on its way from the Cevennes to the Mediterranean. Between Conqueyrac and Sauve , the Rieu Massel flows into the Vidourle as a right tributary. The landscape of the municipality includes a plain lined with a few hills on which there are several small settlements. A core place with village structures has not emerged; The Mairie as a municipal administration is located at the intersection of the main roads D999 and D181 and is only surrounded by a few residential buildings. This settlement is sometimes referred to as Conqueyrac Mairie .

The neighboring municipalities of Conqueyrac are Monoblet and Durfort-et-Saint-Martin-de-Sossenac in the north, Sauve in the east, Pompignan in the south and Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort in the west.

Infrastructure

D999, which runs through the municipality, connects to Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort and Ganges to the west, while to the east via Sauve and Quissac to Nîmes and also provides connections to Montpellier. The D181 is the connection to the neighboring town of Pompignan to the south.

History and culture

The Romanesque chapel of Saint-André , which belongs to the municipality , has been listed as a Monument historique since 1973 . It was first mentioned in 1256 and was one of a number of ecclesiastical institutions around Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort that belonged to the Cathedral Chapter of Nîmes in the late Middle Ages . Like other churches and chapels in the region, it was built from the greyish limestone of the nearby village of Pompignan. The building is located on a secluded hill above the Vidourle valley. A special feature are their proportions, which make the apse and the choir larger than the nave . The chapel of the hamlet of Aguzan was also made from the stones of Pompignan , which was also built in Romanesque style and is privately owned.

On August 12, 2003, a temperature of 44.1 ° Celsius was measured at measuring points in the communities of Conqueyrac and in Saint-Christol-lez-Alès , around 20 kilometers away . This measurement in the context of the European heat wave in 2003 exceeded the 80-year-old maximum and became the highest temperature ever recorded in France. At the end of June 2019, this high value was exceeded in several places in southern France and finally a new record of 45.9 ° Celsius was measured in Gallargues-le-Montueux, also in the Gard department.

The sparsely populated area of the municipality is not a result of modern migration, but has existed for centuries without major changes. In 1793, 96 residents were counted and slight population losses in the following years could be compensated for by the incorporation of the municipalities of Aguzan and Ceirac , which last had fewer than 20 residents each, in 1809 , so that the number in 1821 was 103 residents. From around 1890, the statistics show a significant increase in population up to 201 people in 1911, but the number fell back to the level of around 100 residents by the 1950s. It then remained at this level with minor fluctuations.
