history
economy
The family business Bas Lys , founded by Monsieur Brun d'Arre , employed almost 1,100 workers in 1890. Mainly ladies' stockings were produced, which were sold under the brand LYS (Eng. "Lily"). This is one of the first artificial brand names that was not derived from the name of the manufacturer. The families of the employees benefited from company discounts such as subsidized apartments, allotments, canteen, library and more.
Camille Chante was actually a pharmacist in Le Vigan but also a local writer. In 1933, in his book Le Vigan et ses environs - Un coin des Cévennes, he wrote about the Brun factory:
“This important manufacture is the oldest in the region and dates back to 1740. The business has been passed on from father to son for generations, always with the same double goal in mind: to keep the business prosperous and to maintain the prosperity of the region. "
coat of arms
Blazon : A silver defensive tower in green, followed by a piece of wall of the same color on the left. The whole walled in black.
Population development
The village used to have more inhabitants. During the Second World War it was still around 450, with almost all employees working for the Bas Lys company.
