Lanuéjols is a French commune with 357 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .

The municipality of Lanuéjols is located in the mountains of the Cevennes and is 72 kilometers northwest of the regional capital Montpellier . It is located around 15 kilometers west of the summit of Mont Aigoual and is correspondingly high, with the highest point in its area reaching 1,187 meters. In addition, its landscape is shaped by the Causse Noir high plateau . In its east it is traversed by the upper reaches of the Trèvezel ; there the tributary Bramabiau flows into the Trèvezel. In addition, there is another larger flowing body of water in the municipality, the brook Foux . In addition to the core town of Lanuéjols, the municipality includes a few small hamlets, including Montjardin and Le Roquet .

The neighboring municipalities of Lanuéjols are Veyreau and Meyrueis in the north, Saint-Sauveur-Camprieu in the east, Dourbies in the south-east, Trèves in the south, Nant and Revens in the south-west and La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-André-de-Vézines in the west. In the north, the municipality borders on the neighboring Lozère department , while the western edge of the municipality also forms the border with the Aveyron department .

Infrastructure

In addition to small local roads, the D986, a regional road, passes the town. This ultimately establishes the connection to the region around Mende via Meyrueis and a connection to the cities of Ganges and Le Vigan via Valleraugue , whereby it partly leads through very mountainous terrain. There is also a direct route to Millau with the D29 .

History and culture

Before the French Revolution , Lanuéjols belonged to the jurisdiction of the Viguerie of Le Vigan and Meyrueis, while in ecclesiastical terms it was under the Archpriest of Meyrueis and ultimately the Diocese of Nîmes . Ancient graves were discovered in the municipal area, which indicate settlement already at this time. The Celts in particular, who lived in the region in the first millennium BC, left their mark, especially in the form of menhirs and dolmens. The present place was first mentioned in 1102 under the name Lamejol . As in large parts of the Cevennes region, the local population converted to the Protestant faith around 1560. In the following century in particular, however, this religious group suffered from persecution, which was expressed, among other things, in the destruction of the Protestant church in 1663. As a result of these conflicts, the Cevennes War broke out in the region between 1702 and 1705 .

The forest area forêt des commandeurs belonging to the municipality is known for its red deer population . A large part of the red deer from the region collects there, especially in winter.

In 1793 the community was inhabited by 940 people and it grew as a result until the population reached its historical high of 1,187 in 1831. For almost a hundred years, the value remained almost at this level, before fewer than 1,000 inhabitants were recorded again in the 1920s. In the following decades, and especially during the Second World War , there was another sharp decline, which is why the number fell continuously and the municipality only had 304 residents in 1990. Since then, however, the population has grown slightly again.
