Les Plantiers is a French commune with 257 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Le Vigan and the Canton of Le Vigan .

geography

The municipality of Les Plantiers is located in the Cévennes Mountains and is 75 kilometers northwest of Nîmes and 38 kilometers west of Alès . It is part of a sparsely populated area and is made up of about ten small towns and hamlets, with the eponymous place being its center.

The landscape of the area is characterized by several chains of hills and mountain ridges. The Serre des Tours ridge is the highest point in the municipality, reaching 1,069 meters above sea level. The core town, however, lies in the valley, into which some mountain streams flow down. The Ruisseau de Borgne runs through the valley and the town center and flows a few kilometers further east outside the municipality into the Gardon de Saint-Jean .

History and culture

The name Les Plantiers is derived from the Occitan word plantada , which means “plantation” or “planting”. However, it is unclear to which type of cultivation it can be traced back. For example, it could be mulberries that were cultivated very early.

The local church of Saint-Marcel , which has been listed as a Monument historique since 1986, two kilometers outside the center , was first mentioned in writing in 1249. It was probably built in the 12th century and was presumably built in three construction phases: First the apse , then the nave and finally a chapel on the south side. In 1503 two chapels, no longer preserved today, and a bell tower on the opposite side were added on the north side. As part of the Reformation, the majority of the believers in the area converted to Protestantism, which is why the building probably also served as a place of prayer for this denomination at times. This changed when a Protestant church was built in the hamlet of Les Plantiers. The latter, however, was destroyed following the withdrawal of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. The older church building was not spared such a fate either: during the Cevennes Wars , which were based on a revolt of the Protestant camisards, the building went up in flames in 1702. After it could be used again from 1723, it was finally closed in 1794 during the French Revolution . It then suffered from increasing deterioration before renovation work began in the 1970s.

The municipality experienced a heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries, when silkworm breeding was very important and brought a certain level of prosperity and a growing population with it. The traces of this time are still visible today: On the one hand, there are the associated buildings and, on the other hand, there are a large number of mulberry trees that formed a basis for breeding. At the same time, it was a crisis in the silkworm industry in the late 19th century that led to a decline and exodus. Around the same time, the traditional size distribution within the municipality was reversed : Historically, the town of Saint-Marcel de Fontfouillouse had always been the largest and had given the municipality its name, but was then overtaken by Les Plantiers . Because of this, the municipality was renamed in 1874 in its favor. In 1953 there was also a change of area when the hamlet of Tourgueille was spun off and incorporated into Saint-André-de-Valborgne.

According to a source from 1550, the community was then inhabited by around 925 people. In 1793 it was even more populous and had 1,200 citizens; In 1846 an all-time high was reached with 1,350 people. In the second half of the 19th century, however, a clear downward trend began, causing the number to fall into the three-digit range in the 1880s. This development took on even more extreme features, especially during the two world wars, as a result of which only 312 inhabitants were registered in 1946. The historic low was reached in 1990 with 221 people and since then the value has leveled off at this level.
