Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort ( Occitan : Sant Ipolit del Fòrt ) is a French commune with 3939 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Le Vigan and the Canton of Le Vigan .

geography

Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort is located in the Cevennes on the Vidourle river , into which the Argentesse flows. Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Cros in the north, Monoblet in the north and north-east, Conqueyrac in the east and south-east, Pompignan in the south, Montoulieu in the south-west and La Cadière-et-Cambo in the west and north-west.

The former national routes 99 and 582 run through the municipality .

history

During the Second World War, the place was temporarily the headquarters of the 9th SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen" . When the German troops withdrew from the south of France, on August 25, 1944, the resistance attacked the marching columns . On the German side there were considerable material losses and 400–500 deaths. a. two people from the village died, to whom a memorial stone is dedicated.
