Durfort-et-Saint-Martin-de-Sossenac is a commune in the French department of Gard in the region Occitania . It belongs to the canton of Quissac and the arrondissement of Le Vigan . It borders in the north-west on Fressac , in the north on Saint-Félix-de-Pallières , in the north-east on Tornac , in the east on Saint-Nazaire-des-Gardies , in the south-east on Saint-Jean-de-Crieulon , in the south on Sauve , to the southwest by Conqueyrac and to the west by Monoblet .
A mammoth skeleton (" southern elephant ") was discovered in 1869 one kilometer from the village . During excavations, the remains of a total of four mammoths, four hippos, five bison, four large deer and a rhinoceros were found on an area of approx. 6000 m². However, the exposed bones were very brittle. Only a single skeleton - the so-called "Mammoth of Durfort" - could be completely recovered and preserved. It is dated to an age of around 2 million years and is now exhibited in the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris.
