Aigues Folles waterfall and the Hérault bridge

Saint-Julien-de-la-Nef is a French commune with 141 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .

geography

The municipality of Saint-Julien-de-la-Nef is located in the Cevennes and is 44 kilometers north of the metropolis of Montpellier as the crow flies and 56 kilometers northwest of Nîmes . It is relatively sparsely populated and consists of several hamlets and farms.

The area is traversed by the Hérault , which paves a path in a north-south direction. In contrast to this is the hill country, in which the villages are also located. The latter split on both sides of the river. Near the municipal administration center with the Mairie , the Aigues Folles , a waterfall, plunge down from the rock.

The neighboring communities of Saint-Julien-de-la-Nef are Sumène in the north and east, Ganges in the south-east, Cazilhac and Saint-Laurent-le-Minier in the south and Saint-Bresson and Roquedur in the west.

Infrastructure

Along the Hérault, the D999 is a regional transport axis through the municipality. It connects to the next larger towns Le Vigan and the immediately neighboring Ganges. Via Ganges it continues to Nîmes under the same name, while the D986 branching off from it represents the connection to Montpellier.

History and culture

The area was already settled at the time of the Roman occupation and a small chapel still exists on the site of the former settlement . The first written mention of it comes from 1248 and contains the name Saint Juliani di Navi , from which the current version emerged over the centuries. An important historical building from the late Middle Ages is the still existing stone arch bridge over the Hérault, the construction of which dates back to the 15th century. There are also remains of mines that were probably an important local industry centuries ago. In the course of the Reformation , the Protestant faith gained a much higher status than in the rest of France, which is why there is still a Protestant church on the border to the neighboring commune of Roquedur. In addition, the place suffered from the Cevennes Wars that took place from 1702 to 1705 , which began due to religious tensions against the entire Catholic state.

With the Château d'Isis , Saint-Julien-de-la-Nef has a local castle that has had an eventful history. Around 1600 it housed the French King Henry IV and suffered in the following centuries from the effects of the Cevennes Wars and the French Revolution of 1789. Today it includes tourist accommodation and a restaurant.

In 1793 there were 217 residents. Although the development was fluctuating in the following decades, the number increased overall and came to 337 people who were registered in 1856. The rural exodus that began in the middle of the 19th century led to a significant decline, which is why the community only had 230 citizens in 1901. The twentieth century saw the population decline even more rapidly, until 1968, with 86 inhabitants remaining, a historic low was reached. This was followed by a trend towards growth, which, however, remained subject to strong fluctuations; this at least managed to return to the three-digit range.
