Cardet is a French commune with 871 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .

geography

Cardet is 11 kilometers south of the city of Alès and 50 kilometers northeast of Montpellier . The Gardon d'Anduze , which comes from the town of Anduze ten kilometers to the west and flows into the Gardon a few kilometers to the east, flows directly north of the town center ; Despite the proximity to the village, only a small part of the river belongs to the municipality, which is also traversed by the gas ferrier stream. The village, which is within easy reach of the Cevennes , is surrounded by large agricultural areas, where viticulture is of particular importance.

The neighboring municipalities of Cardet are Ribaute-les-Tavernes in the north, Massanes in the northeast, Cassagnoles in the east, Lédignan in the southeast, Saint-Jean-de-Serres in the south and Lézan in the west.

Infrastructure

In the immediate vicinity of the eastern exit of the village is the D 6110 trunk road as a regional transport axis, which connects to the city of Alès in the north and Sommières in the south and then to Montpellier . A local road branching off from it provides the connection to Lézan and Anduze .

history

In earlier times the place was called Saint Saturnin de Coiran and was not in its current position in the valley, but on the surrounding hills. The valley initially contained nothing more than a few settlements, which were grouped under the name Mas de Cardet . It was the castle on the banks of the Gardon d'Anduze that formed the starting point for the shifting of the village towards the valley, which began in the early 19th century. The focus on the new location in the valley became final when both a school and the municipal administration were established in the Mairie between 1880 and 1882 . In 1911 the existing structures were supplemented by a post office. A few years later Cardet was badly hit by the First World War and had 28 deaths immortalized on a war memorial. After the war, the numerous wine producers united in a wine cooperative in 1924 . During the Second World War and the occupation by the Germans from 1940 to 1944, the village, which was largely free of troops, was a base of the Resistance .

Buildings

Cardet is part of a region in strongly Catholic France, in which the Protestant minority is very well represented. Accordingly, a Protestant church was built in the 17th century, which was one of the few to survive the withdrawal of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. The reason for this was that it fell into the hands of the Catholics at this point, before it became Protestant again with the French Revolution around 100 years later.

The town's castle was originally built in the 13th century and changed considerably from the outside by the feudal lord of the town at the time. It still exists today and is privately owned.

In 1793 the community was inhabited by 421 people and it then experienced fluctuations in both directions until it rose to 507 inhabitants in 1861. A population level of 500 to 600 was maintained for most of the 20th century, before a downward trend followed by a strong upward trend in the 1970s and the 800-inhabitant mark in the early 21st century .
