Aulas is a French commune with 477 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .
geography
The municipality of Aulas is located in the southwest of the Cevennes Mountains and is located 51 kilometers northwest of the regional capital Montpellier . Due to its proximity to Mont Aigoual, which is around 15 kilometers to the north, its area is characterized by great differences in altitude and includes chains of hills and mountains, some of which are over 600 meters high. On the other hand, the Coudoulous flows through it and has a valley on its banks in which the core town of Aulas is also located. Only a few kilometers south this flows into the Arre , which forms another river valley. Along the two rivers, around the small town of Le Vigan, which has a population of around 4,000, a collection of larger towns and villages including aulas forms in an otherwise extremely sparsely populated region.
The neighboring municipalities of Aulas are Arphy in the north, Mandagout in the northeast, Le Vigan in the east, Avèze in the south and Bréau-Mars in the west.
Infrastructure
There are several connections to Le Vigan. The regional road D48 connects in a southerly direction to the valley of the Arre and to the north to the immediate surroundings of the Mont Aigoual. Via Le Vigan there is a connection to Ganges with the D999 and later also to the major cities of Montpellier and Nîmes .
History and culture
In the course of history, Aulas was at times of great importance and was considered the capital of the western Cevennes. Decisive for its development was the strength of the local cloth and fabric production, which shaped the economy and helped the place to prosperity. The materials were essentially used as clothing for the king's army. In 1275, Aulas received city rights and the right to freedom from customs duties. In the 14th century the small town was fortified and provided with several access gates. While the remains of the wall on the banks of the Coudoulous are preserved at Chemin Neuf , there is still a historic city gate at the Chemin du Mas Rouger to the south . In addition, the townscape contains further traces of the prosperity of that time, including the old bridge over the Coudoulous and some mansions from that time.
The economic prosperity continued into the 17th century, after which the processing of sheep's wool became increasingly less important due to competition from cotton and silk. After previous restoration, the former main building of the spinning mill contains a mill for the production of olive oil since 2010. Olive oil production is also a long tradition in the local economy. In the 18th century, the place in the region was an important starting point for the ideas of the Enlightenment , as these were promoted by various local families. In addition, Aulas, like the entire region, is strongly influenced by the Protestant faith, so that there is both a Catholic and a Protestant church in the village.
