Campestre-et-Luc is a French commune with 99 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .
geography
The municipality of Campestre-et-Luc is located in the extreme west of the Gard department and on the southern edge of the Cevennes , which in turn are assigned to the Massif Central . The closest major cities are Montpellier, 55 kilometers southeast, and Nîmes , 77 kilometers as the crow flies. A major landscape element in this part of the mountain range are the Causses , which are high plateaus made of limestone. The municipality belongs to an extremely sparsely populated region and extends itself over an area of around 38 km². On its northern edge is the valley of the river Vis , while on its southern and western edges the Virenque runs. Both river valleys form significantly deeper gorges, which are followed by steep slopes. Above these slopes, the Causse de Campestre forms an extensive high plateau between the rivers. Far to the northeast of the Causse and close to the slope of the Vis Gorge is the village of Campestre, while the much smaller hamlet of Le Luc is located in the south above the Virenque valley.
The municipality borders in the south on the neighboring department of Hérault and in the west on the department of Aveyron , with the virusesque the natural border. The neighboring municipalities of Campestre-et-Luc are Alzon in the north and east, Blandas and Vissec in the south-east, Sorbs (Dép. Hérault) in the south, Le Cros (Dép. Hérault) and La Couvertoirade (Dép. Aveyron) in the south-west and Sauclières ( Dép. Aveyron) to the west and north-west.
Infrastructure
In addition to a network of local roads across the high plateau, the D49 is particularly relevant as a connection from Campestre to Alzon . From there there is a connection to Le Vigan via the main road D999 and thus also to the more distant regions around Montpellier and Nîmes. To the west, the D999 connects to the A75 autoroute and the area around Millau . The D273 runs in a north-south direction through the municipality of Campestre-et-Luc, connects to the neighboring town of Le Cros and also enables a connection to the A75 autoroute.
history
The predominant industry on the high plateau has always been agriculture, with sheep breeding traditionally in the foreground. Cattle breeding was increasingly added as a relatively current development. Because the milk was difficult to transport due to the great distance to cities and the poor accessibility of the Causse, it was customary until the late 19th century to produce sheep's cheese on site and then store it in caves. Young prisoners were involved in a company in the hamlet of Le Luc . In 1884 that producer received an award in Paris for the quality of his products. Shortly thereafter, however, it was taken over by the manufacturers of the Roquefort , whose production remained part of the local economy into the 21st century.

In 1793, the former municipality of Campestre was still inhabited by 450 people. The incorporation of the formerly independent municipality of Luc in 1812 did not bring any significant increase in population, as Luc previously had only 27 inhabitants. Nevertheless, the number of residents grew in the course of the 19th century to a record of 902 in 1886. At the turn of the century, however, there was a rapid decline to 454 inhabitants, who were recorded in 1911. The downward trend continued to only 72 people in 1982. Subsequently, at least the number of 100 residents was exceeded again.
