View of the village

Corconne is a French commune with 542 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .

geography

The municipality of Corconne is located 31 kilometers north of the regional capital Montpellier , 46 kilometers west of Nîmes and 33 kilometers southwest of Alès . In the south and west it borders on the neighboring Hérault department .

The village is located on the southern edge of the Massif de Coutach mountain range , which is part of the Cevennes . From the north side of the settlement area in the valley, the terrain rises steeply and is sometimes even characterized by massive rock faces. Various elevations form a canyon-like gorge, the opening of which is located near the village. Unlike the forested hills in the north, the south of the municipality around the hamlet of La Gravette is largely characterized by viticulture , which is favored by the nature of the soil. To the east of the village center, there are also some olive groves mixed with the vines .

The neighboring communities of Corconne are Sauve in the north, Liouc in the northeast, Brouzet-lès-Quissac in the east, Vacquières and Sauteyrargues in the south, Claret in the west and Pompignan in the north-west.

Infrastructure

Immediately south of the town center, the D45 is a road that connects to the northeast to the nearest larger town of Quissac and in the other direction to the greater Montpellier area. There are also local routes that connect to the neighboring villages. There is also access to the cities of Alès and Nîmes via Quissac.

History, culture and sights

The existence of the place goes back to the Middle Ages and has been documented in writing since 1119. Today's chapel, which was first mentioned in a document in 1188, also dates from around this time. The building was built as a fortification, probably to defend the Counts of Toulouse ; The background was the proximity to the sphere of influence of the Provence region . At that time Corconne was controlled by the lords of Sauze and Anduze , who in turn were allies of the county of Toulouse. Only in 1857 were the remains of the building converted by the residents into a chapel dedicated to St. Mary; some forms of the earlier building have been preserved. The background was a cholera epidemic that occurred a few years earlier, from which the place was spared. Pilgrimages are held there every year to this day.

Due to the great importance of olive cultivation, there were two mills from the 17th century in the village until 1914 for the purpose of further processing. Based on the long tradition of this branch of industry, the village holds an olive festival every year on the second Sunday in December. The place itself also contains a historical substance and includes some old houses from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The municipality

In view of the location directly on the Massif de Coutach, the spectacular form is one of the most important sights of the municipality. The most famous is the Pont du Hasard , which is a rock arch a few meters high that connects two rock formations. In addition, the mountains have numerous other remarkable features, including a canyon-shaped gorge. A hiking trail labeled PR47 gives access to the terrain around the village.

The level of 610 residents in 1793 was roughly maintained in the following 19th century, so that in 1906 584 people could still be counted. In the first half of the 20th century, the population began to decline sharply, until 1975, when it reached a historic low of 239 citizens. From then on there was a significant increase, which meant that the 500-inhabitant mark could be exceeded again around 2000.
