Liouc is a French commune with 281 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .
geography
The municipality of Liouc is located 28 kilometers southwest of Alès and 41 kilometers northwest of Nîmes . In addition to a few hamlets and individual settlements, the municipality essentially consists of the two settlement centers Liouc and La Rouvière ; the two villages are only a few hundred meters apart. Although Liouc is named, La Rouvière is the larger settlement.
The terrain has considerable differences in height: to the east, where the Vidourle River flows through the municipality, lies a valley, the height of which is 64 meters at its lowest point. Another part is taken up by the mountain ranges of the Cevennes and has its highest point at 443 meters on the summit of the Coutach . From these high altitudes in particular, a number of streams flow down towards the valley.
The neighboring municipalities of Liouc are Quissac in the north, Orthoux-Sérignac-Quilhan in the east, Brouzet-lès-Quissac in the south, Corconne in the southwest and Sauve in the west.
Infrastructure
A network of local roads runs through the area of the municipality, connecting in particular to Quissac, which is located immediately to the north, but also to other neighboring towns in the area. Via Quissac there is access to the national D999 , which is a direct route to Nîmes and a junction that enables the connection to the cities of Alès and Montpellier .
History and culture
The existence of the village of Liouc has been documented since its first verifiable mention in 1108. From then on, almost half a century passed before a local parish was officially established under the name of Saint Blaise by a bull by Pope Hadrian IV . The associated church was probably the chapel of the local castle complex. The latter was probably built in the 11th or 12th century, but its existence has only been documented with certainty since 1250. With the Leuze and la Roque families , there were only two lines of rule that shaped the development of the village throughout the entire feudal period up to the 18th century .
During the Renaissance , a more modern mansion in the form of a castle replaced the former castle. The church, on the other hand, went through difficult times, was badly damaged for the first time in 1560 and partially destroyed again in 1622 after repairs, before the second repair was carried out in 1656. Like the entire region, Liouc was strongly Protestant, which was also true of his ruling family. Because this orientation of the Christian faith in France suffered from persecution and oppression, the tensions between 1702 and 1705 erupted in the Cevennes War , which also affected Liouc. On October 12, 1710, the last ruler of the village who lived there died, whereupon there were several changes of ownership. The castle survived the centuries and is largely privately owned, but also houses the municipal administration.
Agriculture has always been an important economic basis for the local economy. Until the middle of the 19th century, it was a question of a balanced mixture of different crops as well as sheep breeding, since then viticulture has prevailed. In the late 20th century this was absolutely dominant, but a crisis in this industry in particular caused a significant decline; nevertheless, viticulture still makes up more than half of the agricultural area.
Population development

The level of 110 residents in 1793 was roughly maintained in the subsequent 19th century. At times the number fell into the double-digit range before exactly 100 people could be counted again in 1911. From then on, however, there was a clear downward trend until 1968 only 51 citizens of Liouc were recorded. In the 1970s, on the other hand, there was a trend reversal and significant growth set in, which increased massively after the dawn of the 21st century and the number even grew beyond 200.
