Pompignan ( Occitan : Pompinhan ) is a town in the south of France and a municipality with 957 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .

location

Pompignan lies in a basin of the southeastern foothills of the Cevennes, framed by the two arms of the river Rieu Massel, at an altitude of approx. 180 m above sea level. d. M. approx. 44 km north of Montpellier . The climate is temperate; Rain falls throughout the year.

The population decline since the second half of the 19th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture. The renewed population growth at the beginning of the 21st century is mainly due to the resettlement of crafts and small industries.

For centuries the people of Pompignan lived on the crops of their fields and gardens as a self-sufficiency . Livestock breeding (sheep, goats, chickens) also played a certain role. The limestone quarries and viticulture in the vicinity of the place were and are important . In the 17th and 18th centuries, there were numerous glassblowing and tanneries in the region because of the lush forests . As a result, the forests in the valleys have largely disappeared today.

Numerous Stone Age finds have been made in the vicinity of Pompignan . The history of the place can be traced back to a Roman country estate ( villa rustica ) ; the first written mention of the place name comes from the year 1384. In the 16th century, Protestantism largely prevailed in the region , but was forbidden by the Edict of Fontainebleau (1685) and then persecuted. The camisard revolt (1702–1704) caused renewed unrest in the area. The revolutionary years brought the cult of reason and the cult of the Supreme Being ; after that there was some liberalization.

  • The three-aisled Saint-Pancrase church was built in the second half of the 19th century in neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic styles . Personalities

  • Mathias Alphonse Bourras (1836–1880), general in the war of 1870/71, was born in Pompignan. In his honor, the sculptor Léopold Morice created a life-size bronze statue around 1890, which was placed in the town's market square.
