Saint-Bresson is a French commune with 54 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .

geography

The municipality of Saint-Bresson is located in the Cevennes mountains and is 44 kilometers north of the regional capital Montpellier and five and a half kilometers southeast of the small town of Le Vigan, which has 4,000 inhabitants . Their area is characterized to a very large extent by wooded hills and has an altitude difference of almost 500 meters between the highest and the lowest point. The municipality is traversed by the small streams Coularou and Maudesse , but Saint-Bresson does not have a river valley like the Arre valley to the north .

The village of Saint-Bresson is on the top of a hill about 500 meters high. In addition to the core town, the community includes some hamlets or country houses ( mas ), which are connected to old trees of oak, chestnut and olive trees. Due to the lack of a large river and other conditions, Saint-Bresson suffers from a fundamental water shortage, which, in addition to the remote location in the mountains, can serve as a further explanation for the low population density.

The neighboring municipalities of Saint-Bresson are Roquedur in the north, Saint-Julien-de-la-Nef in the east, Saint-Laurent-le-Minier in the south-east, Pommiers in the south-west and Le Vigan in the west and north-west.

Infrastructure

There is a direct connection to Le Vigan via a local road, while the small town of Ganges , located in the opposite direction, can only be reached by a detour via Saint-Laurent-le-Minier. From Ganges there are connections to the major cities of Montpellier and Nîmes .

History and economy

Due to the prevailing lack of water and the already poor suitability of the terrain, classic forms of agriculture never found widespread use in Saint-Bresson. Instead, branches that were not affected by this, such as sheep breeding or vegetable growing, for example in the form of the cultivation of the mild onions of the Cevennes, were in the foreground. This tradition has been preserved to this day, while olive production, which was important in earlier times, no longer played a role. Saint-Bresson is also known for its once large deposits of truffle mushrooms . During the French Revolution , which included a ban on religious place names, the commune bore the name Mont-aux-Truffes or, alternatively, Mont-Truffier . In the meantime, however, truffles are much less common.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the village, which had shrunk to around 50 inhabitants, pushed ahead with an innovation by connecting its households with a shared Internet connection. This also made it possible to counteract the geographical remoteness, as it enabled some residents to switch to working from home .

In 1793 Saint-Bresson had 204 inhabitants and in the following period the population increased to 316 people, who were recorded in 1856. Then a slightly negative trend set in, which intensified very much in the first half of the 20th century. Especially during the world wars, the municipality lost its population and ultimately the value had shrunk to just 86 residents by 1954. Until the 1980s, the population decreased again significantly and from then on settled at a level of around 50 people.
