Rascassols dolmen

The dolmen of Rascassols (also called Galaberte ) is located north of Montpellier in the west of the Gard department in France , in the municipality of Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort at the end of a dead end road. Rascassols means flat stone in Occitan . In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The dolmen, restored in 1990, is one of the largest in the Gard. The stone mound that once completely covered the megalithic complex has been partially removed. But its dimensions are still recognizable. Rascassols has a 10 meter long corridor, which was stabilized with dry masonry during the restoration , and which leads into a square chamber with a side length of 2.5 m. The ceiling plate measures 2.3 × 2.9 m and is 60 cm thick. The entrance is formed by stones that have been positioned or worked in such a way that they form a triangular entrance.
