Jean Clottes divides the midi dolmen and menhirs in the 12 Départements des Midi in ( southern France ) into ten groups, two of which concern statue menhirs and eight dolmens . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

Clottes also counts dolmens with walls made of dry stone to the megalithic complex

On the edge of the Pyrenees are:
- in the west the "Dolmens du Pays Basque" YELLOW (Dolmen de Gaxteena (also Gasteynia dolmen, Chuberam dolmen or Gasteena dolmen), Dolmen de Buluntza, Dolmen de la Chabola de La Hechicera, Dolmen de Pouey-Mayou ).
- in the east the "Dolmens du Roussillon" (eg Dolmen Na Cristiana ).
At the Garonne is located
- the group of the "Allée couvertes Aquitaines" (eg dolmen of Mouleyre ).
At the Dordogne and the lower reaches of Lot and Aveyron are
- the "Dolmens du Quercy" (eg Dolmen Dolmen de la Pierre Martine ).
On the upper reaches of the Lot , Aveyron and Tarn lie
- the "Dolmens des Grands Causses" (e.g. Ronc Traoucat dolmen )
At the Ardèche are
- the "Dolmens de L'Ardeche". With 800 dolmens, the area has the second largest area after Brittany (e.g. Dolmen du Calvaire , Dolmen du Chanet , necropolis in the Bois des Géantes ).
At the Aude are
- the "Dolmens du Minervois" (eg Dolmen Lo Morrel dos Fados and Dolmen de Pépieux-Minervois).
lie between Castres and Nimes
- the "Dolmens Languedociennes" (e.g. Dolmen du Lamalou , Bois des Géantes and Dolmen de Gallardet )
in Provence there is another very different group (purple) ( Pierre de la Fée ).
