Le Grau-du-Roi ( Occitan Lo Grau dau Rei ) is a commune in the Gard department in the region of Occitan in southern France . It has 8,517 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
geography
Le Grau-du-Roi is the southernmost commune in the Gard department. This is the only access to the sea in this department. When the departments were initially subdivided, the Hérault department renounced the town of Le Grau-du-Roi and received the then very rich town of Ganges in return .
Le Grau-du-Roi was founded by Italian immigrants at the end of the 19th century in an inhospitable zone between the sea and ponds at the mouth of the Vidourle in the Mediterranean. Until the 1920s, the city's economic activities were entirely limited to fishing. After that, tourism became increasingly important.
At the end of the 1960s, the construction of a new marina began. Today it has become the Port Camargue district , the largest leisure port in Europe. The ponds around Le Grau-du-Roi are home to numerous wild flamingos .
