Saint-Victor-la-Coste is a French commune with 2073 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .
geography
The municipality is located between Avignon and Bagnols-sur-Cèze west of the Rhone Valley . The place is located in the wine region of Côtes du Rhône Villages .
history
In the hills on the outskirts of the village, people lived in caves as early as the Neolithic Age. Objects from the Neolithic and Copper Age were found there. The Romans built a street that still exists today as Départementstrasse 145 . The Romans also grew wine and built irrigation systems for it. As early as 896 there was the Saint-Martin chapel in Saint-Victor-la-Coste. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Victor-la-Coste was the only larger town in the Vallée de la Tave . The large medieval fortress in the village belonged to the Counts of Toulouse . In the eleventh and twelfth centuries, people moved from the plain to the slope of the hill. From the fortress they could watch over the Rhone Valley and the road to Uzès . In 1249 the fortress was destroyed on the king's orders. After that, Saint-Victor-la-Coste belonged to different families. During the Wars of Religion, the fortress was occupied by royal troops.
