history
The earliest human traces are the paintings in Bayol Cave, which are almost 20,000 years old. The name of the place goes back to Roman times. It was discovered on a stele from the 2nd century in the former Roman temple, which later became a hermitage. This chapel, named Notre Dame de Laval , has recently been restored. There was also the oppidum La Castre during Roman times , from which one could overlook the Gardon River .
The castle of Le Castellas was built in the Middle Ages and the village also had protective walls, which no longer exist today. When the place was part of the rule of Montpezat in the 16th century , it appeared on maps under the name Montpezat-les-Uzès . During the Wars of Religion , the supporters of the Catholic Holy League had to surrender in 1588. Until the middle of the 19th century the village became an important center of silk production. In 1833 the suspension bridge over the Gardon was inaugurated. Later, Collias was one of the first electrified villages in France. The new stone bridge was built from 1920.
