History and culture

Remains of the Paleolithic and Neolithic were discovered early on in the territory of Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres . An old charter shows that the village was known as Arbor (the tree) in the 9th century, so the village got its name from the tree that marked the place. In 919, during the reign of Louis l'Aveugle , Laudoin and his wife Eigenracle sold Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres and his church of Saint-Laurent to the Bishop of Avignon (Foulques). In this act, publicly given in front of the church, we find the first mention of the Church of St. Lawrence. From a donation in 1155 by Pope Hadrian IV. It emerges that Geoffroy I, Bishop of Avignon and his successors, the Lords of Sabran, was given the place. On April 12, 1232, Guillaume de Sabran and Rostaing de Sabran sold the castle and the lands to Bertrand, Bishop of Avignon. The bishops, who had owned the church since 919, also became owners of the castle, of which they were the rulers at the time. In 1255, Decanesse, daughter of Guillaume de Sabran, sold a residential tower in Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres, which is possibly the Ribas tower. Pope John XXII. In the 14th century he built a castle next to the Romanesque church, which he also expanded into a fortified church . Subsequently, an ordinance was imposed on the residents of the neighboring villages to seek refuge with their cattle and property behind the walls of Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres if there was a risk of war. In 1892 this church was declared a monument historique .
