Saint-Bonnet-du-Gard is a French commune with 835 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department of the Occitanie region .

geography

The village is halfway between Nîmes and Avignon . Remoulins is two kilometers away and the Pont du Gard is six kilometers away . Up to thirty medieval houses have been preserved in the village.

history

Saint-Bonnet lived in the 7th century. He administered the monastery in the village for nine years and gave the place its name. He later became Bishop of Clermont-Ferrand . The monks of the monastery played an important role in the local economy. This was on the salt road, near the ford where you could cross the Gardon . In 1806 a fountain was built under Napoleon . Before that, the residents drew their water from a capitelle . There was a Roman aqueduct at Saint-Bonnet . Some of its remains were used as building material.
