The slow but steady population decline in the second half of the 19th century is due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture . Gradual growth began in the 20th century.
economy
The area around Uzès was and is largely agricultural, with viticulture again playing an important role. In the small town itself, handicrafts, trade, commerce and the service sector developed. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the city experienced an economic boom with the production of fine fabrics. The German confectionery manufacturer HARIBO has had a branch here since 1987.
history
An oppidum with the Latinized name Ucetia already stood here in Celtic times , but the place only developed after the Roman conquest of southern Gaul and during and after the Pax Augusta . In the 4th or 5th century Uzès became a bishopric and remained this - despite the migration period , the Albigensian wars , the plague , the Huguenot wars and other troubles - until the French Revolution .
During the Second World War , the nearby Château des Fouzes (German: Schloss Fouzes) was the location of the secret Allied deciphering agency "Cadix" .
