The Temple protestant (German: Evangelical Church) is a church building of the United Protestant Church of France in Uzès in the Gard department ( Occitania region ). The church is located in a preserved part of the former Franciscan monastery of Uzès.

history

The Franciscan monastery was founded by the Dean of Uzes in 1271 to the west of the city wall. In 1361 the monastery was looted and then rebuilt. In the 16th century the monastery church was demolished as part of the expansion of the city fortifications and replaced by a new building by the Franciscans in the 1660s. At the time of the French Revolution only three brothers lived in the monastery.

The only part that has survived today is the former refectory , which dates back to the 13th century and was rebuilt in the 17th century. To the south of the refectory, in the area of the forecourt of today's Temple Protestant, the cloister was connected, to which the monastery church bordered in the south in the area of the avenue de la Liberation and the parking lot. The refectory, an elongated, rectangular hall with a circumferential gallery, was given to the Reformed after the abolition of the convent and rebuilt in 1791 by the architect Valentin Bernardi to meet the requirements of a Protestant preaching church.
